Non-Invasive Biosensor for Glucose Detection

Non-Invasive Biosensor for Glucose Detection

Diabetic patients have to undergo regular blood glucose monitoring for which they have to pass through a painful pinprick method. However, things are soon going to be changed as a new non-invasive biosensor has been developed.

The development details, which have also been published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials, revealed that the newly developed bio-sensor is one of a kind.

The device, which has been developed under the leadership of Jonathan Claussen of the US Naval Research Lab, and Purdue University doctoral student Anurag Kumar, can sense glucose in tears, saliva, blood and urine.

“What's unique is that we can sense in all four different human serums: the saliva, blood, tears and urine. And that hasn't been shown before”, said Claussen.

Claussen said that the newly developed biosensor will not only be able to detect glucose levels, but it is also expected that it will be capable of testing various chemical compounds for other sort of tests.

While explaining about its parts, Claussen said that the bio-sensor is made of three different elements. It has several layers of nanosheets, which mimics rose petals. Second part is known as grapheme and third one is the enzyme known as glucose oxidase.
