FDA Advisory Panel Votes in favor of Drug Humira Expansion

The FDA Advisory Panel has voted in the favor of a drug being produced by Abbott Laboratories. The drug known as Humira is being used for six different conditions and now the company has been seeking approval for the extension of drug for treating ulcerative colitis.

Though it is not vital for the Food and Drug Administration to abide by the panel’s decision, it has always given prominence to the decision of the panel. FDA will take final decision by the end of 2012, and if gets approved then the drug will be allowed to be provided those, who have tried all the other drugs, but have not received any relief.

Ulcerative colitis is a kind of bowel infection, which causes ulcers in colon. The condition is getting common among Americans, as 700,000 Americans have been affected by the same. Great hopes have been pinned on the drug, which is considered to one of the top selling drugs across the globe.

If the drug gets green signal then it will become the first biologic drug, which can be injected by patients as well. The news has a positive impact on the shares of the company, as they rose by 1 cent, which amounts to $65.73 per share.
