2 More Infected at Yosemite National Park

California public health officials informed that two more people have been diagnosed with Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which is said to be a dangerous rodent-borne virus, at Yosemite National Park. Addition of two new people has taken the total number to six.

Among the six, two people have lost their lives, while other four have been able to survive the disease. Investigation has revealed that victims have been infected at the time when they stayed at Curry Village. As soon as it was revealed that the virus has been spreading at the village, park officials took an action and closed 91 insulated tent-cabins.

Thorough investigations were taken out and it was found that deer mice were the ones, which were spreading the virus. In order to raise awareness, park authorities have informed 2,900 people, who have stayed in the village. They have asked to get their checkups done, so it could be known that whether they have been infected with the virus or not.

Dr. Charles Chiu, who is an infectious disease specialist and has been working at the University of California, was of the view, "The message should not be you should stop camping. The important thing is general awareness of this disease and to avoid wild rodents in general”.
