The World of AFIRM A Boom for Wounded American Troops

The modern medical technology is being used to develop better treatments to aid America’s soldiers and those wounded while serving for the nation. Experts are not just sticking to ear, bone and skin grafting, they are heading towards more advanced transplants and surgeries.

Four years have passed since the Federal Government funded $300 million to raise AFIRM (Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine), which included a system comprising top hospitals and universities working together to emerge with new treatments using human cells and advanced plastic surgery.

"The whole idea is to bring all these researchers together to develop these great technologies that were in early science to eventually be ready for the troops”, said AFIRM's recently retired Director Terry Irgens.

The projects, which used to be at a time just lingering on in labs and were too complex to be handled, are now being introduced in reality and are also being launched in clinics.

Strang, 28, a Marine sergeant from Pittsburgh, is one amongst the many who have been able to avail the benefit of the research. He lost half of his thigh muscle, due to which he was not able to walk properly.

However, after an experimental treatment at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, he has been able to stabilize his movement.
