Power disruption and consequent failure pushed the doctors of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital to conduct a surgery under the lights of cell phones. On Friday night, when a mum was near to give birth to a child through C-section, the power failure left the doctors with no other light source besides their cell phones.
The doctors didn’t have any other option as if they had waited for light then the mother might have succumbed to death because of excessive bleeding. Besides, a patient on ventilator was also kept alive by the medical staff by manually pumping oxygen for 30 minutes.
Although the doctors of the Hospital did their best in saving lives at time of power crisis, Chairman Dr. Langanani Mbodi clear denied of any operation being interrupted by power failure. Dr. Mbodi said, “The power outage happened at 2am and the power was restored about two hours later, and in that period there were no operations taking place”.
However, he has applauded the medical staff for taking good care of the patient at the time of crisis. But, his statement saying nothing about the operation has misled the media. Mbodi said that the news about doctors conducting operation under cell phones’ light is misleading.
