Killer Whales Close to their Mothers, Says Research

Recently, a team of scientists has found that the mother killer whales have longest menopause among all living beings. The mystery behind the stretched menopause of the whales has not yet been uncovered.

The findings have been made by British and Canadian scientists. The researchers conduct an analysis of killer whales’ population in the past 36 years. The findings have been published in the pages of the journal Science.

During the study, the researchers further noted that the whales above the age of 30 years die within one year after the death of their mothers. One of the researchers, Dr. Dan Franks, said, “Our analysis shows that male killer whales are pretty much mummy's boys and struggle to survive without their mother's help”.

Killer whales are closer to their mothers and, therefore, surviving without them is difficult. The findings of the researchers will help in understanding the peculiar nature of the mammals. It has further been noted that the whales mate outside the group.

Females reproduce about 15 to 40 times. But only five or six offsprings survive in the ocean water. Normally, male whales do not reproduce before the age of 20.
