NASA Curiosity rover sends down images of partial solar eclipses on Mars

With NASA’s Curiosity rover having recently sent remarkably breathtaking images of Mars’ two moons - Phobos and Deimos - as they pass across the Sun, researchers are of the opinion that it may well be possible to understand the interior structure and composition of the Red Planet.

The recent pictures sent down by the 1-ton Curiosity rover pertain to several partial solar eclipses on Mars --- with one of the images being that of a September 13 event involving Mars’ small satellite Phobos biting into the sun's disk; and another showing additional partial eclipses which were caused, a few days later, by Phobos and the other Mars tiny moon, Deimos.

According to the information shared by the researchers, the extraordinary images captured by the Curiosity rover will help in precisely pinning down the orbits of both Phobos and Deimos.

In addition, the photos will also facilitate scientists in ascertaining the extent of change which the two Mars moons have undergone during the course of the past few years.

Noting that the mentioned information carries the potential of giving the scientists some key insights about the highly-mysterious Mars’ interior, Texas A&M University’s Mark Lemmon – co-investigator of the Curiosity science team – said: "We can't go inside Mars, but we can use these to tell how much Mars is deformed when the moons go by.”
