As per a recent study, it has been revealed that more number of elderly has been getting their knee replacement surgeries done. Two main reasons for undergoing the surgeries have been found to be obesity and a way to save costs.
In order to reach at the above given result, the study researchers have assessed more than 3 million Medicare patients, who were aged between 65 and above. The data was assessed between 1991 and 2010.
After assessing the report, the study researchers found that the number of surgeries have doubled from 2001 to 2010. Moreover, it has also been found that percentage of revision surgeries has also increased.
Lead researcher of the study Dr. Peter Cram, who is positioned as associate professor at the University of Iowa, was of the view that more number of elderly people want to remain active and this is the reason that they have getting the surgery done.
Another reason for rise in the surgery is that people are living longer. "This growth is likely driven by a combination of factors including an expansion in the types of patients considered likely to benefit from TKA, an aging population”, said study researchers, as the story gets published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
