People feast eyes on Harvest Moon on September 29

Carrying the title of "Harvest Moon," this weekend’s full moon was a special one.

When people in the Northern Hemisphere looked at the full moon on Saturday, September 29 at 11:19 p. m. EDT, feast their eyes on a bigger and closer moon.

The full moon closest to the autumnal equinox, which this year fell on September 22, is called the harvest moon. This full moon is different from the other full moons of the year because it rises at approximately the same time for numerous nights in a row.

At this time of year, the full moon comes up just after the sun sets, and allows farmers to work in fields for longer hours. In full moons, farmers work late into the evening to harvest their crop. It is thus how the harvest moon got its name.

Ed Krupp, director of Los Angeles-based Griffith Observatory, said, “This brings a great deal of light into the early evening sky, which was important for the people harvesting because it extended the period of useful work time they could work in the fields.”

It is interesting to note here that the harvest moon is not the only one to have got a special name. The new moon following the harvest moon is called Hunter's moon in some regions of the world, as it aids hunters in stalking night game.
