It’s just an old myth to believe that vitamin D supplements are good enough to prevent colds or other forms of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI).
In a new study it has been found that vitamin D doses have to do nothing with this common problem.
In last few decades, several debates have taken place in regard to the effects of vitamin D. According to a controlled laboratory research, there is no doubt to say that vitamin D lays several beneficial effects on the immune system, and people with low levels of it are at a higher risk for URTIs.
But then at the same time, authors of a recent study, published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Assn., has pinpointed the outcomes to be incomplete and mixed up.
It was difficult to conclude the role of vitamin D over the occurrence of URTIs and therefore researchers from New Zealand carried out a randomized trial nicknamed VIDARIS, and studied effects of Vitamin D over Acute Respiratory Infections.
There were two groups; they gave monthly vitamin D doses (proved as most effective against colds in earlier studies) to one group for 18 next months and a placebo to other.
As a result the authors found an insignificant difference between the URTI episodes of both the groups.
