Another Black Hole in Milky Way Galaxy

“Bright X-ray novae are so rare that they’re essentially once-a-mission events and this is the first one Swift has seen. This is really something we’ve been waiting for”, principal investigator Neil Gehrels was quoted as saying after Swift’s Burst Alert Telescope found something out of world.

The Swift satellite was launched back in September by Goddard Space Flight Center. Though, it was aimed at looking for X-ray, ultraviolet, gamma-ray or other optical events in the sky. The report finds that it has instead discovered a tide of high-energy X-rays, rising from a source somewhere near the Milky Way galaxy‘s center.

The mission members say after observing the same for some days that this is nothing but a stellar-mass black hole, which was unknown till date. Since, the discovery was different from other burst detected by the satellite.

The object’s sky position was tested and finding the coordinates, the nova at some degrees from the galaxy’s center toward the constellation Sagittarius, scientists named it as Swift J1745-26. In the meanwhile, it has been told that an X-ray nova is an X-ray source that suddenly comes and stretches in a few days. Also, it fades in a few months.

It is being estimated that the object is around 20,000 to 30,000 light-years from the inner region of the galaxy.
