Curiosity to Deliver Martian Sand Samples

Curiosity to Deliver Martian Sand Samples

Scientists from NASA have made an announcement this Thursday i. e. October 4 that the Mars rover Curiosity is this time to bring samples of Martian soil for the first time.

The rover has previously also done wonderful job as it had sent some pictures of its own shadow on Mars and dust and stones. Now, when it has arrived at Rocknest, a first batch is being expected very soon, the report finds.

Rocknest is a sandy patch on the red planet, where Curiosity of almost 1 ton had reached on Wednesday, October 3. As per the scientists, part of the mission, the place is appropriate for maiden scooping activities to be carried out by the robot.

The rover has a scoop system at the end of its robotic arm of 7-foot. The aim of the system is to allow the robot to scoop up and deliver samples into two instruments. The two analytical devices include CheMin (Chemistry and Mineralogy) and SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars).

However, it is being said that initial samples of Martian sand would only be used for cleaning out the handling system. “We take these steps to remove any residual material from Earth that might be on the walls of our sample handling system”, Joel Hurowitz, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Curiosity sampling system scientist in Pasadena.
