A group of researchers at the Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne's Monash University has been planning to test Botox now for treating hay fever, a recent report has uncovered. The drug has shown success in its early-stage trials, which have now given boost to a big-scale trial.
Botox is best-selling drug and is widely used for wrinkle-erasing purpose. It has a great use when it comes to treating spasms in muscles caused after a stroke or cerebral palsy. And researchers hope to see the drug in the form of a gel now as a promising treatment for hay fever as well.
Till date, tablets and nasal sprays are used for the same, but it is being said that these may soon probably become a thing of past. Not for a bout, but patients may realize relief for months, since Botulinum toxin or Botox is not merely a cosmetic product.
Initial trials have seen it providing relief from the fever by blocking nerve endings, which are in the nasal passage. The gel was applied to the nasal cavity only. Symptoms were prevented from being triggered and inflammation was cut.
"We hope this world-first trial will be the first step towards relief for millions of Australians and millions worldwide", said Sleep and Respiratory Medicine Director Philip Bardin.
