Slime Mold uses Externalized Spatial Memory to Navigate

Researchers at the University of Sydney have unveiled that slime mold Physarum polycephalum has a form of memory. The revelation may sound to be quite strange to many but it is the truth, said study researchers.

Initially, it was being said that the slime mold did not have its own recognizing pathways. However, it was later noticed that the slime mold is using externalized spatial memory to navigate its pathways. In order to reach at the above given result, the study researchers placed a U-shaped trap on the organism.

Biologist Chris Reid was of the view that they placed a U-shaped trap in Physarum. It was then being noticed that 96% of these species were able to pass through the test. While increasing the level of difficulty of the test, the researchers coated trap with slime then it was being noticed that not many were able to pass the test.

Those able to pass the test were not able to return on time. “Most unicellular organisms can detect how a gradient of chemicals is changing and they can move along that gradient if they want to get to the source”, said Reid. He expects that slime is using extracellular slime to find a way.
