‘Prize Fight’ Shows the Hidden Side of Scientists

A distinguished professor of radiology and medicine Dr. Morton Meyers from the State University of New York has brought a new book of his own. ‘Prize Fight: The Race and the Rivalry to be the First in Science’ has shed light over a dark and hidden side, the backside of the award stage.

Nobel prizes are organized each year to recognize those who put efforts to take science to a new level. Their achievements are acknowledged and awards are distributed in different fields, including medicine, chemistry and physics.

A similar function was held this week too, the Nobel prizes for 2012, at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. But, according to Dr. Meyers, none of you would have imagined what happens after the award ceremony is over.

From there is formed a new stage, which is not covered by media and does not remain in limelight. But, here people backstab and the reason is the urge to be recognized amongst scientists. Their deed so noble in terms of betterment of life turns so poor, as they seek acknowledgement and awards.

"How is credit distributed? Who gets the authority? In a winner-take-all society, to be first is to reap the reward, and to be second is to be forgotten”, said Dr. Meyers.
