Yellowstone Supercomputer to Aid Climate Change Researchers

Recent reports have subjected that one of the largest supercomputers in the world, set up in Wyoming, will be made available for the use of climate change researchers.

In a statement, released by Computerworld on Tuesday, it has been reported that National Center for Atmospheric Research will be making use of an IBM built system that has been included amongst the top 20 supercomputers, Yellowstone that has a processing speed of 1.5 petaflop.

Petaflop is a measure of the processing speed of a computer and can be expressed as thousand trillion floating point operations per second.

With Yellowstone, the NCAR said, “It now has "the world's most powerful supercomputer dedicated to geosciences. Installed at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center in Cheyenne, Yellowstone is 30 times as fast as NCAR's existing computer”.

Researchers asserted that they will be deploying the powerful; supercomputer to carry out a comprehensive study into the climatic changes, severe weather conditions, oceanography, to determine the quality of air and to estimate the frequency of geomagnetic storms, earthquakes and tsunamis.

Rich Loft, the Director of Technology Development at the Cheyenne center, asserted that with the introduction of the $25 million machine, several projects will be carried out.
