One commonly comes across the news about elderly suffering injuries due to falls. It is now that a Canadian research has been carried out by a group of researchers from Simon Fraser University, British Columbia.

The study has revealed some of the reasons for which elderly falls and get injured. The study, which has been published in the Lancet, carried out an experiment on two care homes. Another special thing about the research is that closed circuit video surveillance systems were being used to know the reasons of fall.

The CCTV cameras were being installed at public areas of the homes. In total, 227 falls of 130 residents were being evaluated. After assessing the falls, it was being revealed that the main reasons of the falls were shifting their weight in a wrong way, second reason of fall was their feet and other things get caught in table or a chair. The last reason was that they slipped.

Lead researcher Stephen Rabinovitch was of the view, “The general scarcity of reliable information on falls in elderly people has hindered the development of safer environments for older people and fall prevention programmes”. It is said that measures should be taken so that number of falling incidents get reduced.
