October has been set as the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer, rather, any form of cancer poses a series of challenges to be faced by the sufferer as well as their family and close friends.

However, the major challenge is faced by those, who have been recently detected of breast cancer; they find it hard to look out for sources, which can provide them help financially and even by other means.

Patients are keen to obtain complete information regarding surgeries, chemotherapy sessions and also how to overcome the problem of hair loss. They want answers to all their queries.

Although Washtenaw County has many local sources and support groups, which assist the women in their problems, women can also check out for a community of women or sisterhood of those who have survived breast cancer.

A few of these sources, include the Dexter District Library and the Chelsea District Library, which provide women enough of information regarding their condition.

One of the breast cancer survivors at the sisterhood, Shari Showalter, who served as a nurse case manager for the Mercy Center for Breast Health, was detected of breast cancer during a regular mammogram in January 2012.

She said, "Some women are overwhelmed when they get the diagnosis. It's unexpected and unplanned".
