It has been recently revealed that seaweed might be turned into biofuel in the time to come. Some of the best reasons that make it such an ideal plant for turning into fuel are because it grows in plenty and it tends to grow under water so it would not even crowd the surface of the earth.

Some of the other features are that if the plant attains nutrition from the sea water and there is no need for fertilization or irrigation for the crop, making it all the more worthy and cost effective.

For the people who want to get into the field of biofuel making, it is essential to note that the plant does not have lignin in it. This is a complex type of sugar contained in plants, which tends to make it stiff and brittle. This is something that proves to be a negative for many plants which are to be turned into biofuel contents. It’s another positive for seaweed.

It was revealed by researchers from Bio Architecture Lab, situated in the University of Washington in Seattle that this is one of the first and basic steps being taken towards making seaweed, worthy of its natural qualities.

It was revealed by Yasuo Yoshikuni, a synthetic biologist that his team made some genetic mutations in Escherichia coli, which is a gut bacterium, and it was given the new ability to transform sugar into edible kep, known as Kombu.

"The form of the sugar inside the seaweed is very exotic. There is no industrial microbe to break down alginate and convert it into fuels and chemical compounds”, revealed Yoshikuni in a report. It is a matter of time to see how eventually seaweed might be used for its properties and made into biofuel, to solve many purposes for the scientific world.
