Retrofits Are A Better Option Than The LEED Certified Buildings

In a recent study, it has been told that instead of demolishing the existing buildings, one must look into retrofitting existing buildings. This could not only reduce the excessive cost incurred, it could also keep the environment more clean.

While there is no doubt that with the rate at which global population is growing, there would be growing need of buildings. However, there is need to ensure that there is no compromise made on the climate. There is a need to make sure that human activities don't damage the climatic conditions to an extent that they affect the life of humans in the end.

Published by the Preservation Green Lab of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the study was done after a comprehensive analysis of environmental impacts of various buildings located in four cities around the country was done. It is necessary that building structures are being studied before damaging them. It was found that it would take nearly 10 to 80 years for a new structure to gain the resistance to beat the wrath of climate. A major portion of the buildings made consume between 20-30 years to reach the level that they can sustain any climatic challenge.

If reports are to be referred to, it has been told that that there are nearly 25% of today's buildings in the U. S which have been demolished starting from 2005 and would continue doing so till 2030.

It is being believed that there is still lot to be done in the same context before passing any conclusive statement. The team said that "further research is needed to clarify how impacts are altered if a new or existing building can be brought to a net-zero level using various technologies, including renewable energy".

It has been recommended that instead of going for a LEED certified building, one can build an eco-friendly structure which could give a safe place to live on for a long time.
