It seems that there could be many more places under the threat of being tagged endangered after the Chesapeake Bay, North Carolina's Piedmont and the mountains of Tennessee and Virginia have been listed down in the list of most endangered places in the Southeast. Prepared by the Southern Environmental Law Center, the fourth annual "Top 10 Endangered Places" has included these names after it were found to be under the threat of environmental pollution.

In addition, Alabama coast, South Carolina's Savannah River and Tennessee's Chilhowee Mountain were found in the list after they were found to be in danger zone. There are significant chances of these places to face irrecoverable threat in 2012. It was told by Maria Hawthorne, the SELC's Director of development, that the South's special places and natural riches have been consistently attacked by pollution, coal mining and natural gas exploration. This is what is told to have played crucial role in making things go to this extent.

Moreover, there is another report confirming that the Catawba River basin has also made place in the most-endangered-places list. It has been further told that the Catawba has been facing threat from the toxin ash ponds there at Duke Energy power plants. It was also told that there was significant disruption of stream flows which further aggravated the situation.

It is being known that the Southern Environmental Law Center has offices in Chapel Hill, Asheville and Charleston. For the last 25 years, it has been doing exceptional work in the field of environment. It is being believed that there is need for striking a balance between economic development and environmental hazard. Human activities could push the environmental health to dismal low in the time to come if concrete measures are not being taken.
