Hip Implants May be Toxic, Warn Medics

A recent report has uncovered that hip replacements can lead to future failure after a few years from the implant received. It is being said that successful hip replacement surgeries can prove poisonous up to 50% in the future.

It has been found that hip replacements and less drastic hip resurfacing that are found to be giving relaxation and almost 95% chances that the receiver would have a pain-free mobility for nearly about 10 to 15 years. But, it has equally been revealed that those receive a total metal implant of hip may face critical problems in future.

The report says that friction between the components of metal can lead to breaking off small metal fragments that could further be leaked into the bloodstream. As per the medical regulators, metal implants could gradually break and destroy muscle tissue, which in turn enter the bloodstream and cause lethal problems. It has also been told by doctors that the fragments could prove toxic to the kidneys too.

Also, it has been found that most of the patients are unaware of these dangers caused due to hip implants and it has been suggested by experts to them to visit the doctors and find out if they have got any of the muscles damaged. They should also get a checkup for the levels of cobalt and chromium in the blood.

Besides, lawyers of a few patients who received their hip replacements from DePuy are planning for compensation claims. It is deemed that a massive number of patients is not aware about the same and thus, has not applied for it till now.

“If some patients haven’t been told, that is appalling. We have been saying to the world that these implants are wearing out and there could be problems ahead, but we need to ensure the public gets the message”, says an orthopaedic surgeon Tony Nargol from North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust.
