A recent report has revealed that a new drug vismodegib introduced for the treatment of a skin cancer known as basal-cell skin cancer has got the approval of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). It has been found that the drug has been made by the U. S. unit of Roche Holding AG as a treatment for advanced basal-cell skin cancer.

It is being said by the drug makers that the drug that would be brought in the market under the name of Erivedge targets the hedgehog pathway. Hedgehog is the channel used by the cells to communicate. Also, it was told by them that geneticists had named this process as hedgehog.

The report found that geneticists were of the belief that embryos of fruit flies that had mutant forms of the gene allied with pathway appeared as if they had tiny hairs glued to them. Thus, they named the channel as hedgehog.

The drug was approved by the FDA after considering the results of a survey that was conducted on almost 100 patients of locally advanced or metastatic basal-cell carcinoma. It was found in the analysis that tumours tended to shrink in almost half of participants who had local basal-cell carcinoma and tumour was prevented from growing in nearly 30% patients of metastatic cancer.

It has been found that the drug would be costing $7,500 for once-a-day capsules for a whole month. The drug has been launched by the Genentech Inc. in the US for patients having locally advanced basal-cell cancer, but not for patients, who are in need of surgery or radiation, said the researchers.

“Genentech has brought into front the drug named Erivedge with the evidence that a patient suffering from the disease was not responding to any other medicine and showed a positive response to the drug introduced”, said Frederic J. de Sauvage, who is a senior scientist championing development of the drug at Genentech.
