Patients Hospitalized On Sunday under Death Risk

In a recent report, it has been told that those who are being given admission during the long weekend are more likely to lose the battle for life. There have been many studies done which indicated that there are paltry chances of one’s survival if they are being hospitalized during the weekend. The study was done by a team from University College London along with other institutions in the UK.

The claim was based on the examination of records of over 14 million admissions to English NHS hospitals over the financial year of 2009/10. It was found that the risk attached with one dying in the next 30 days of admission in hospital is far more as compared to other timings. There were factors such as age, reason for admission, and other medical illnesses taken into account while the study was done.

"Admission on Tuesday through Friday was associated with the lowest risk of in-hospital death, while admission on Sunday was associated with the highest risk”, said the team.

In comparison to mid week admission, patients were almost 16% at death risk when they admitted on Sundays. There is no confirmed reason found for the claim made. However, there could be some staffing reasons involved in it but the team has not made any statement over the same. The study was seen in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.

It is being said that the result of an increased risk of subsequent death is a relative measure, thus there is still lot to be done before any clinical result could be derived. It is being said by a spokesman for the Royal College of Physicians, that there must be a consultant physician on-site for at least 12 hours a day, seven days a week for hospitals which are admitting such serious patients irrespective of the day they were admitted.
