July 20th marks 44th anniversary of man’s landing on Moon

July 20, 2013 marked the forty-four anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission that made the entire nation proud on July 20, 1969, when Neil Armstrong touched the surface of the Moon.

78-year-old retired propulsion engineer Al Kuhn, who was a part of the project, recalled and shared some of the details of the project.

Kuhn said when the whole world was mesmerized at Armstrong's landing on the Moon, he was more anxious about his leaving because it was easy to land and hard to leave the surface of the Moon.

Speaking on the topic, "The landing, there was a backup. If anything goes wrong, [the lunar module] separates, and we go back. There was always an abort. But the lift-off, here was no backup."

He added that the astronauts only had one chance to take off from the surface of the Moon to get back to Earth. Had it not worked, they would stay on the Moon and die.

Kuhn added that each and every one, including who played very minor parts in the project, were feeling very proud on the success of the project. He remembered a person who had just installed hooks for the astronauts to hang their hammocks was feeling as proud as anyone else on the project.
